Question:

Registered s*x offender next door

I just checked out the national s*x offender thing online and found out that I have a registered s*x offender living right next door to me in on post housing. I realize that it could be anything from having s*x with someone underage to rape or child molestation..some offenses are worse than others in my eyes but this is really bothering me. I thought s*x offenders couldnt live within so many feet of places where children are? We have an elementary school within 1/4 mile and little parks on every street. Not to mention this is disturbing because being on a military base our husbands deploy frequently and theres nothing but a bunch of women and children left here. There are about 50 in all living on our post. Shouldnt there be some laws about s*x offenders living on post or even joining the military? Maybe I'm overreacting, I just want some input. Is there anything I can do?

Oh and I asked this in the military section since I figured they would know more about the regulations on post but my question isnt coming up after a post it so I thought I would try here. You ladies know everything :)

  1. Different offenders have different laws...like you said...molesting a child or rape, or a 19 year old having s*x with a 16 year old. Some are not allowed to live by schools and such.

  2. You should be able to go to local sheriff site and find out what his exact charges are for.

  3. Find out his crime. I am surprised it didn't give you some idea on the registry website. At least what the charges were.

You did not mention your state, but different states have different laws as far as distance from schools and public parks (a swingset in someone's yard does not constitute a park). Here is Florida it is 1500 feet.

Since you are on a military base, that is considered federal land, so you might want to check with the MPs and find out the rules.

Convicted criminals usually cannot join the military. So he is probably a civilian living on post. Definitely worth looking into just for curiosities sake, and since there are so many women there with no men around, I am sure you are all craving some juicy gossip.

  4. You should contact the MP or Family Services with your questions.  I am absolutely certain that they are aware that these s*x offenders are on base.

I actually recently learned that in my state (SC) it is not YET against the law for them to live within a short distance of a school. I was very surprised.

Really, there is nothing else you can do.  Be careful, because some people find out that there is a s*x offender in the neighborhood and want to start passing out flyers and posting signs-that can quickly lead to a libel suit against you.

I do think that the s*x offender registries need to give more information, in relation to the type of crime because as you stated, there is a big difference in an 18 year old being charged with statutory rape after the parents of his 17 year old girlfriend got mad and child molestation and outright rape.

I hope that you get some answers.
