Question:

Regular setting vs. Jump setting?

My coach wants me to learn to jump set, but I'm a bit hesitant because I want to perfect my regular, on the ground setting first. Are there more benefits to jump setting than regular setting? Also, I can set decently and can also two hand dump decently, so would there be a big difference between the two setting styles?

  2. Jump setting is a great setter's tool, and it creates many advantages.

First, it speeds up your offense because you can reach the ball sooner.

Second, it often makes it easier to set quickly or shoots because you're closer to the height of your attacker as he jumps in his approach.

Thirdly, it help you fool your opponents into thinking you're going to attack.

When they put a blocker on you, it's one less blocker for your hitter to worry about. Some setters like to jump set to the outside because most setters jump only when they're going to set the middle. It's important that setters learn to set every set both from the ground and from a jump set. When you jump set, make sure your feet are in position first, then you have to be under the ball to make an accurate jump set. Use the same body and hand positioning as you'd use on a set from the ground. Set the ball when you reach the peak of your jump.

You need to practice, practice, practice and more practice. This set doesn't come naturally to most people and takes work to master.

  3. Mix Jump Set and Jump-Dump, compared to those "on the ground" dump, you will see why jump setters are more of a danger to defenders. Combined with those sets, your hitters will get more kill because you are taking at least 1/2 blocker (if not one blocker) away from their faces.

There was an older version of discussion regarding Regular setting vs. Jump setting... and the winning answer was:

Jump set can beat the ball to the net when there is a "bad" pass, without letting the ball go over.

Jump set enables the front row setter to dump the ball and catch the opponent off-guard, so that the opponent would have to put a blocker on the setter.

Jump set can shorten the distance between the set and the quick hit, thus making the quick hit quicker.

Practicing jump set can help the setter get better control thru fingers and wrists, without that much help from waist and legs.

  4. i would say jump setting. you get alot more power and i usually get more control.  I am becomming a setter and i have done alot better when i was jump setting.  Try jump setting durring practice and then regular setting and see the distance and the spin.  It is good to try new things. even if you dont do well at first your coach will see that you are trying and will respect you for that.  hope you do well!
