What relationship does U.S have with Puerto Rico t oday?

Puerto Rico was under Spanish rule until 1898 when the Spanish - American war broke out and the United States took over Puerto Rico. We then became a possession of the United States and we still are a territory of the United States.  Here we use the American dollar, we have American Factories, stores, companies and we do not have to use passports to go to the States and we are American Citizens. But we do want Puerto Rico to be the 51st. State of the Union.

Puerto Rico is a Colony of the USA.

The Commonwealth (ELA) or the better of the two worlds is a fallacy that is moving the country to the bankruptcy. The United Nations in many occasions determined that P. R. is a non incorporate territory of the US or a colony, but this term is not "good" for the US policy. The Partido Nuevo Progresista and the Partido Indendentista agree on that but many people in the Partido Popular Democratic refuse to accept the reality.

sailcat answer shows that s/he is a member of the 5% of Puerto Ricans that are in favor of independence. Over the last 30 years there have been 6 elections/referendums on PR's status, and it divides evenly between 45 % want statehood, 45% want to stay as a "Commonwealth".ie a Territory of the United States, likes Samoa and the Virgin Islands and Guam.

Puerto Ricans are American citizens, just like someone from Pennsylvania or Utah; food stamps, welfare, join the Army, US Post Office and zip codes......main difference is you can not vote for President, no Senators or Congressmen, and no Federal Income Tax.
