Remote desktop will not connect

Question

I created an account in windows xp on my sp2 machine, then created a different partition using the same username. Instead of seeing the "useraccountname" in most admin screens, I now see the "computername\useraccountname" or ".\useraccountname". Also remote desktop is not accessible, which is my primary gripe here. I get a "could not start the terminal services service error 1079" because apparently, another service is conflicting with this service, or as another error message states, "Because of a protocol error detected at the client (code 0x1104), this session will be terminated. Please try connecting to the remote computer again". I have tried using one or all three of my DNS addresses with no success. I have a static IP set, and Remote Desktop service is enabled, and I have tried starting the Security Center service. I get a "Could not start the security service on the local computer. Errror 1079: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process." Unfortunately, I cannot decipher enough of these messages to get rdp working successfully. I have a wrt54g router that I have enabled port forwarding on, and before I repartitioned Windows, could use rdp successfully. Firewall is disabled.

First of all, I would not recommend opening access to your PC from the World.  But if that's what you want to do, that's your thing.

You need to set the service to run under the local system account, then go to the System properties in control panel, on the Remote tab select to allow remote access and chose the local account you want to grant access to.
