Question:

Removing tile from the wall?

When someone removes tiling like a backsplash in the kitchen, is it normal for the dry wall behind the tile to be damaged to where it may need to be replaced, or does that mean it has been done wrong? Should the wall not have any holes or damage to it, after the tile has been removed, or is it standard to have to replace the dry wall/backerboard behind the tile?

  1. EH it cannot be removed with out damage to drywall.  Buy gallon of joint compound and putty knife.  Spread it on damaged drywall,  after it dries in about 24 hours, sand to smooth finish.

    Good Luck

  2. It depends on the glue or cement used to adhere the tile to the drywall. Sometimes you could take tile off and it wouldn't leave a mark, other times you can take the tile off and it would gouge it out really bad and you'd have to replace the drywall.

  3. It is normal for the dry wall to be damaged, if it is a back splash behind a kitchen sink, just put a skim coat over it and smooth it out, sand, prime and repaint and install the new backsplash.

  4. What it means is that the tile was properly and well installed.  It's normal to have to do some repair work before retiling.
