Resorts in Cancun?

Does anyone have any recommendations for resorts in Cancun Mexico? We are going with a group of people ranging from the age of 24 to 34. We love to drink and party, and also want to do some water excursions and see the Mayan ruins. I really want a resort that is on the beach and that has balcony’s in its rooms (3 or 4 star resorts) anyone have any ideas?

  1. Riu Palace Las Americas (RPLA) is a high end resort, kind of quiet and with top quality services. Many younger people prefer to stay at the next door Riu Cancun because of the on-site nightclub, 24 hour sports bar and the activities around the pool all day long. This resort is in walking distance of the Party Center, the area of Cancun where the famous nightlife is located.

Speaking of the Party Center, this is the reason I will say that you may wish to not stay at the Moon Palace. I am not saying that Moon is not an excellent resort, but it is far outside of Cancun's Hotel Zone and difficult to reach the Party Center. Instead you may wish to stay at a Palace resort in the HZ such as Cancun Palace, Beach Palace or Sun Palace (adults only).

Since you plan to do some drinking, the best option for you is to stay at an All-Inclusive resort. That being said, since you want to also do some day trips, on those days when you are away from the resort, you will not be able to take advantage of the food and drinks you pre-paid for. However, if you stay at the Gran Melia, you can purchase the AI plan on the mornings of the days you decide you want to have it. This is a great option for those who plan to take day trips to the Mayan ruins, snorkeling, etc., etc.

Here are a few resorts to consider:

    Dreams Resort

    Sunset Royal

Gran Caribe Real-the sister resort next door is the adults only The Royal in Cancun.

    Barcelo Tucancun

    Park Royal

    Golden Parnassus-adults only

    Gran Melia

GR Solaris-upscale sister resort of Royal Solaris

There are many more resorts in Cancun, but you should start by investigating these. As for day trips, since you are traveling in the summer, I assume, you may wish to wait a few days to get acclamated to the heat and humidity before visiting Mayan ruin sites. The site of Chichen Itza is located inland and can become quite hot in the summer months. The site of Tulum is located overlooking the Caribbean Sea and is cooler because of the location. This tour is coupled with a visit to an area eco park, I recommend you choose to couple Tulum with Xel-Ha and get the All-Inclusive plan. The park of Xcaret is fantastic, but much too large to see in a half day, you're better off going here on its own day trip. A swim with dolpins is nice to do and I recommend you go with Dolphin Discovery on Isla Mujeres. This way, after your session, you can break away and see the rest of the island on your own self guided day tour. You would rent a golf cart in the north town and drive around, it's really a fun place to spend the day. The other thing you should consider doing, besides snorkeling, is you should consider a swim with whale sharks. These are the biggest fish on the planet and they only visit the area once per year. Be sure to book with a company that shows their license number on the website because there are some that do not have a proper license. Here is one that we used, very reputable and a great money back policy:

Whatever you do, if you book any tour online, yes you will save money but you should also be sure to book with companies that offer rescheduling and cancelation policies. The travel agencies at the resorts do not offer this.

Have fun planning your vacation in paradise,

  2. Danielle,

My GF (22) and I (24) just came back from a week long trip at Moon Palace resort. We were with a group of people (22-40+). And we all had a GREAT time there. The resort was HUGE, many activities to do (some free some not), all inclusive food, drinks, alcohol, and even some tours. As well as courtesy shuttles to their other resorts and some places downtown like shopping, bars, and etc. The cool thing too was if you went to other palace resorts you still were all inclusive to food, drinks, alcohol, facilities, etc.

Anyway Moon Palace is HUGE, the rooms are beautiful (especially the hammock on your balcony and a jaccuzzi in the room facing outside (very romantic)). The only drag of Moon Palace is that their beach is just okay (the current goes a weird direction causing a lot of kelp build up). The Beach Palace or Cancun Palace though is much smaller, but they do have a little nicer of a beach (just smaller). Anyway my girlfriend and I (as well as our group) had an amazing time with Palace Resorts...highly recommend them.
