as a environmentalist I do many things to help our only planet. I have been recently interested in reusing water from steaming vegetables, water from shaving my face, and some other things as well. But I'm curious what can I use this water for? watering plants? what?

Thanks

  1. The veg water can be used for many things, but other types such as your shaving water should be filtered before using as aything else.

  2. When I cook veg I always use the water to cook them to make the gravy, veg looses nutrients while cooking so this is a good way to get them back.

As for water from shaving your face, I guess using it to water the plants is fine as long as there is nothing harmful to plant life in your shaving foam (they put some real nasty stuff in toiletries)

You could also use it to flush your toilet.

Why not take a look at the Big green switch website, it's full of green and energy saving tips and you can discuss and swap ideas with others trying to be more environmentally friendly.

  3. Water from steamed vegtables can be used for soup stock.

You can pour it into Ice cube trays, freeze it, then place cubes into a ziplock bag to pull out of the freezer as you need to use it.  Also these cubes can be added to a recipe that needs a little moisture, yet adding plain water would dull the taste.

The face shaving water would be safest on the garden or lawn.

  4. I use the washing up water for washing the car - not the windows - I use clean water for that. I've never thought about water from shaving until now, and quite frankly I don't think that bristles are an environmentally friendly by-product.

  5. If you dont use chemical soaps and washing up liquids etc then the water can be re used on your plants.

I use my washing up water on the garden as i use clear spring washing up liquid which is non toxic.

My clothes washing water (as i do hand washing with eco balls or natural soap flakes), also bath or shower water too gets used to wash my floors first before going on the garden, i was using it to flush the loo too but dont like leaving the bath full of water and using a bucket to pour it down the loo was just a bit too much effort and made the bathroom wet all the time.

Water from steamed veg can be used to drink or as stock in stews, soups, gravies.

When i get a bit more organised i want to harvest all the rain water from my roof to use in the house as well as on the garden, its in progress at the moment.

  6. water plants, use in compost pile.  You are on the right track.

you might want to look at the way they reuse water on earthships....

If you go to www.earthship.net and go to the online store then mechanical they have some very interesting technology.

It is also a good idea to rig up a system to re use water from your sink to flush your toilet.  You would need a storage tank and a few other things, but all and all its not too difficult.

  7. Water from all those things can be used again, safest on the garden, if you visit www.evengreener.com you can get a. a pump action hose that draws water from baths etc. out the bathroom window into the hose (one pump to set it going then it just draws the rest through) and b. an additive which you can add to this water and the shaving water to make it more chemically stable to prevent the soaps and detergents from harming plants. Good luck with it all.

  8. i use the veg water for making gravy or sauce, it has vitamins in.

grey water can be filtered stored and used to flush the toilet, but much easier to use it on the garden.

  9. the veggie water could be used in gravies as it will contain the plant material used for thickener altho it wont be as good as potatoe water.

other water known as grey water such as from washing up can be used to water the garden. what would be better would be to use ecover products which is biodegradable and much safer to put back into the water system or use on plants

  10. the vege water for sauce thats what my mum always does its yummiee :D

  11. I don't know about this but its just an idea but if the vegetables are steamed that means the water is boiled, hence sterile, so in theory you could let it cool and drink it, it may taste of vegetables though. but better still, while hot use to clean dishes.

  12. If its water from steaming veggies, then its good for watering all sorts of plants. If you use eco-friendly soaps for washing dishes or your hands, throw it in the compost bin to moisten the compost. It can break down with the compost. Also, if you have to run the shower water and wait until it is hot enough, then collect that and use it for anything, really.  There is  a mini-sink you can install on the top of your toilet  that you can wash your hands with (in the really clean water) and then you wind up doing the flush with the grey water from cleaning your hands.
