I yesterday I came home from a week long vacation to find a giant dead rat on my floor. I live in the smallest studio. The smell is unbearable. I found some hospital-grade air sanitizers and tried oust but the odor is beyond disgusting. Since I life in a studio there is no means to escape that smell without staying with friends until it's gone. Any suggestions?

  1. there is probaly another dead  somewhere call an exterminator!!asap!

  2. You can use ammonia and water mixture. It stops the smell. Some of the brands of air freshener will probably not be strong enough to do anything except kill the bacteria.......

    Good luck with that smell.....

  3. well my question why was there a cute poor little rat on your floor? i would try getting rid of the rat opening all the doors, bleaching the spot where you found it, and then spray some kind of air freshener and go outside with something to do for about an hour. If  you mix bleach with ammonia you can get rid of it easy but i wouldn't be inside after you poor it, I would open the most hidden window, leave and get a hotel room for about 2 days checking it both days

  6. The smell may be because another rat is lying dead somewhere.  While the stench is unbearable, it can be dealt with to some degree.  So if nothing is working, there may be one elsewhere.  Try looking along the woodwork for holes chewed, behind and under couches and other furniture, inside cupboards, etc.  Basically look over EVERYTHING.

If you find nothing, then one way to deal with the smell is to clean everything else~  I don't know if it was your pet, but if so, make sure to clean the cage extra well.  Vacuum your carpet, clean all your counters, wash your sheets and clothing (also check clothes hamper, rats like hiding in your clothing, ick!), everything!  If you're lucky, the house will start to smell better because everything else does.

I know this may seem a little degrading, but you're alone.  So get on your hands and knees and sniff around on your carpet to find out where the smell is coming from the most.  You might want to try a home remedy for getting rid of the smell.  You could make a solution of baking soda and water to clean the spot (baking soda cleans well and eliminates odor) and you might even want to splash some Vinegar on it as well.  This will bubble up (if you've never combined the two), but it's safe.  Do this and allow it to dry, then you could always splash some more Vinegar on it and just leave it in.  I've been using White Vinegar for stink remedies, but it's not always the best.  You could try others if you want.

If all else fails, you could always call in someone to professionally clean your carpets.  I believe Stanley Steamers will steam clean your carpets nice and you could ask about shampooing it and stuffs.  Since your studio is small, you might be able to just clean the entire thing for around one hundred dollars.  Maybe.  I believe their number is 1-800-STEEMER.  You can always talk prices with them and they may even be able to suggest something if you feel like asking.

Other than that, I would open all your windows, start all your fans on high, and spray air fresheners.  Hopefully it'll circulate the smell out of your home.  Then when you're done, you could always buy one of those air fresheners by..Air Wick?  I think that's it, but you can set them so they spray air freshener every 9, 18, or 27 minutes.  So that might help, but you might want to buy more than one just in case. (;  I think if you go to the website you can even print a coupon.

In the end, the smell will fade by itself.  While cleaning it will speed up the whole thing, it will go away on it's own...eventually.  I mean, with as much of what you've done already.  I wish you luck as I know how much dead animals smell!  If nothing works, you could always look up more things on google~!!
