So Old Man Hooten down the road died and left me his stupid ostrich in his will. I have all the food and supplies I need to to care for him, but where can I find a whip and ostrich saddle? Also, what are some good ostrich riding techniques?

  1. I think you just ride them bareback... and you probably wouldn't need a whip. Are you riding Western or English? You should probably take lessons first before you start riding. Ostriches can get quite pricey I hope you know the costs! Is this Ostrich green broke? Is it beginner friendly? Maybe you should pick up some books on how to feed and care for it.

  2. I'm not sure if your question was sarcasm or not, but it's still the best thing I've ever heard. But be aware... I'm sure rather than bucking, they'll stop short and stick their heads into the ground to get you off.

    Good luck!!!

  3. AWWWWE MAN! That would be so fun. I once went on a exotic game ranch tour and was bet 50 bucks to try to ride one. But the stupid tour guide stopped me. Sucked. Let us know what its like!

Edit-Thanks Ziggy, that was my plan too. I will remember that next time I think about trying to ride one.

Maybe if I try the Rambo drop form a tree branch. That might work.

Edit- Debbi you think ostrich dressage would be wierd?

What about ostrich cutting? Yeah. Let that sink in a bit.

Maybe if you tied a rope around the beak you could steer them? A thought

Edit-Imabohemian is right! There are atleast 2-3 deaths a year in south Texas from ostrich attacks. The mexicans swimming the border with sneak on the some of the exotic game ranches and try to steal eggs to eat. Them thar big turkeys can be ornery

  4. OMG  Debi....too funny. I have heard rumors of this but didnt know they went all out and had races.....hilarious!

  5. u r 1of the luckiest people in the world

  6. Awww! I love ostriches! Remember your father...(don't ask where that came from)...sway back and forth while riding the big buddy like bird

  7. I now know how to celebrate my 21st an Ostrich Trail ride

  8. Not sure about Ostrich riding, but when I was a little girl my dad had Emus on his ranch and I tried riding one of those. LOL

I tried to do a running jump onto the back of the thing *'the element of surprise'...  Ha, yeah..... Right* and I got a kick to the gut for it! It was more painful then ANY horse kick I've ever gotten.

    **Edit**

Kevin good plan! Too bad my plan didn't work, it would have been cool to tell people I got to ride an emu. =P

  9. Luneytun....horses were wild animals until someone thought it would be a good idea to hop on!

  10. Aww that's mean. You shouldn't ride an Ostrich they're not meant to be ridden they are wild animals. That's sad. =( What's wrong with you people saying you want to ride one??!!

Gallop that's different. WAY different. Don't ask me how, it just is!!

  11. Yes...its true. They are ridden bareback...just as an FYI ...they  kick, but you probably know that.

Should they hit you with those sharp claws, you're in trouble.

The can disembowel you if they hit you right and they have pretty good aim.

    Ostrich up!

  12. I think any old whip will do and I think they usually ride them bareback - think you can handle it ?

  13. You can go bareback on an ostrich and I don't think you will be needing a whip - maybe some reins to steer when he bolts off instead?
