Since my last question i have been thinking about a Ar-15 more. I want a gun that can convert from .223 or 30-06 to .22Lr. Since AR's are getting more popular i thought there must be a conversion kit out right?

I want to plink but also shoot at longer distances with more power. Too much?

Willing to spend $500 for gun and $200 for the conversion kit.

DOESN'T NEED TO BE AR-15

  1. You can convert an AR15 with a ceiner or colt conversion bolt and a magazine to .22LR but not to .30-06. You could get an AR10 in .308 but it won't be able to convert so much. An AR15 can be converted to off the top of my head .22LR,  9mm, .45ACP, 50AE, 50 Beowolf, .458 socom,  6.8 SPC, 7.62x39, 5.45x39, and 6.5 grendel. That is of course with a different upper reciever excluding .22LR where all you need is the conversion bolt and magazine.

Of course for a decent stock AR15 you will need to spend more than $500 but you can get one around $700 used and $800 new that are high quality but will be stock.

The thompson center encore and knights new rifle can be changed from to all of those calibers however.

  2. Sounds like you should look into a Ruger 10-22. While you cant convert it to a larger caliber, you can accessorize it 100 different ways, and an aftermarket barrel might even allow you to shoot the hot 17hmr. (not sure about the last).

there are hundreds of accessories for the 10-22 from look alike stocks like AK-47 or AR-15 to folding stocks, extended mags, laser sights heavy barrels, adjustable triggers, etc.

Nothing cooler than a modified 10-22!

  3. I can think of only two convertible rifles that would be within a teen's budget.

1 - H&R Handi Rifle.  I don't think they are available in .22 LR, but if you purchase something like a .30-'06, you can have half a dozen or more different barrels in different calibers and gauges at very modest prices.  I believe you can get a Handi-Rifle for around $250.00 and additional barrels can be fitted for about $150.00 extra.

2 - Thompson Center Contender or Encore.  You can get barrels from .17 HMR up to .45-70 from T/C and JD Jones produces barrels upto and including .577 Nitro Express.  I think T/C offers something like 40 different calibers.

Both of these rifles are single-shots, but if you shoot well enough, one shot is enough.

  4. Sorry Dude, That is not happening.

There are 223 size AR (AR-15) frame and 308 size AR (AR-10) frames, No 30-06 long action size that I have heard of.

Now a 223 AR can take a 22LR upper and work fine.

But as of right now the AR-10 can not shoot 223 or 22LR.

Thompson Center Encore can do that switch about.

  5. The AR style rifle you are looking for is the Cobb Manufacturing MCR.  The magazine well is removable and there are several sizes available from .223 up to 50BMG.  To switch from .223 to 30-06, you must change out the magazine well and the upper assembly containing the upper receiver, bolt carrier group and barrel.  To switch from .223 to .22 LR, you should probably get a Ceiner rimfire adapter kit, or, if you can find one, a CZ 22 LR upper assembly.
