Question:

Right arm pain with bulging veins

Since 7pm last night had pain from shoulder to my hand only in my right arm. Very sore, very achy type of pain.

The veins near my wrist on the inside of my arm are really bulging, this isn't the case on the left arm. Feels like constant pressure coming down from my bicep. Veins around my thumb on the palm of my hand are also prominent, again not the same as the left.

I don't use a PC for any length of time, so I am not a candidate for RSI. Am on contraceptive pill & Buserelin injection (IVF medicine). Haven't done anything strenous or lifting.

I called our GP service who doesn't think it is anything of note over the phone. Any remedy to make it feel better until it heals up.

I am a 27 year old lady.

  1. lift your arm up.

  2. Stop connecting your vibrator to the car battery, then your arm won't get sore.

  3. Ouch. Sounds bad. Go see your doctor.

  4. I had a similar thing and went to a doc.

I though it was an embolism in a vein and he checked the colour of my fingers and hands and then pressed on the fingernails to see how quick blood flowed back, which was instant, so it proved it wasn't an embolism.

He said it was muscular and that there are a lot of small muscles in the forearm and I've probably strained them. Was prescribed Nurofen tablets.

I found buying a wrist strap from a sports shop and putting on my forearm where it aches stops the ache and having done that for a few days it's now gone.

Might also be worth trying the ice spray things you can get for muscle pain. Unless when you press your fingers the blood doesn't return as quick as on the other hand. In which case see a doc.

  5. get yourself to a&e for a check, the g.p. service probably cannot be bothered / overworked to see you

  6. Hello. I'm sure this is concerning you.

If there is color change to the skin of the limb, if there is pain and swelling- then it might indicate a brachial venous thrombosis (blockage) of a deep vein in your arm. But it doesn't sound like all these symptoms are present.

If not, then are you doing anything strenuous with your right arm? Is this the arm you write with- and are you holding an infant on your right hip, supporting them with the right arm? The extra work-load in such a hypothetical case could increase muscle tone which would increase loading to the veins supplying the arm- thus they are bulging.

Just as a general pointer, ED (estrogen dominant) type contraceptive pills can *rarely* have the side effect of causing DVT, deep vein thrombosis. It is important to know possible side-effects of the contraceptive pill; and if pain and other symptoms described above occur, to see your Doctor.

I hope your arm becomes its regular self soon.

  7. Go to A&E,the doctor you phoned should have gave you the same advice, your on meds and anything could be wrong.good luck.

  8. s***w that Doc, go to emergency now.........
