Question:

Risk-like boardgame?

what im looking for is a game that is visually similar to Risk (the huge world map), but involves more territories (or a free-movement system that uses calculated distance to determine movement) and incorporates military tactics instead of a random roll of the dice. diplomatic options would would be a bonus, and it does not matter whether the game is a physical board game, a computer game, or a conglom of both. I would prefer it to be a more realtime scenario, but turn base is also acceptable.

any ideas?

  1. For board games, see the line up of Avalon Hill games.  The ones that match your criteria are Blitzkrieg, Panzer Leader, Panzer Blitz, The Rise of the Third Reich.  Panzer Leader and Panzer Blitz are platoon size units with each turn being six minutes of real time.

These are the ones I know and have played.  There are many others.

  2. If "diplomatic options" are a bonus.. I think you'd like the game DIPLOMACY.

In the game, 2-7 players represent one of several European countries (France, Germany, Austria-Hungary, etc.) at about the time of World War I. There are only two kinds of units: sea and land. On a turn, each of your pieces has very few options: move into an adjoining territory or help another unit move into or defend an adjoining territory.  The game involves simultaneous action selection.. so it's effective a real-time board game. It takes about 6+ hours to play the game.
