The Spey is an example of a river with very little estuary, so is freshwater from source to mouth apart from a bit of brackish zone at the mouth itself.  As with the Aberdeenshire Dee, the Spey is one of the best Salmon fisheries and bot Salmon and Sea Trout make the transition from seawater living to freshwater living as part of their breeding cycle.  Notably a few hen fish do return to the sea after spawning but the male (proper name is bleeped out here) fish all die in the freshwater zone.  But of course they are replaced by younger ones in the end.
