With the arrival of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 are planning on claiming the signatures of a couple of more forwards, Downing’s role as a winger seems to be in jeopardy.
Instead, Rodgers now plans on utilizing the services of his 20 million pounds player in the rearguard. He unravelled that he had a chat with the English International about his new status, and he was more than willing to accept it.
The manager told the reporters in an interview, “If you look at the modern day full-backs, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ashley-Cole-c6809 - Ashley Cole was a centre-forward. But you looked at Stewart in the half hour against Hearts, he served the ball well, he got forward and
defended a couple of times. That is important.”
The former Swansea City boss then went on to say that the winger played at the same position for Middlesbrough during their march towards the UEFA Cup final in 2006. Hence, he will already be cognizant of what will be required of him in his new role.
However, he mentioned that he would only switch his place, if Downing himself had no problem with it.
“There is no point putting a player into a position he doesn't want to play. But when you speak to someone and tell them what the future could be, along with the qualities that he has, there is no doubt that in the modern game, he could play that role,”
he added.
The former Aston Villa player was signed by the Merseyside outfit during the last year’s summer transfer window, but has struggled to make any notable impression at Anfield thus far.
All in all, he has made 50 appearances for the Reds in all competitions, and notched up just 3 goals.
