http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 manager Brendan Rodgers revealed he has set Gylfi Sigurdsson as one of his prime targets for the summer transfers, given the Icelandic International refuses to work alongside the new boss at Liberty Stadium.
Rodgers left Swansea City for Liverpool after announcing his three-year deal with the Merseyside club on Friday. The Northern Irishman enjoys noticeable clout and influence over multiple players at the Welsh club, with the Swans subsequently penning a deal
with Rodgers barring him from poaching players from Liberty Stadium to Anfield.
Sigurdsson, one of the star performers for the Swans during the 2011/12 campaign, reportedly joined the club in January on loan from Hoffenheim in order to work alongside Rodgers. His phenomenal six-month spell at Swansea forced the Welsh side into signing
him on a permanent contract for a club-record transfer fee of 7 million pounds. He made 18 appearances for the Swans in total and netted 7 goals.
With the transfer window set to commence from 1st of July, Rodgers unearthed his longing to sign the 22-year old midfielder but admitted the move will depend on his readiness to leave Swansea.
While talking to reporters, he said: “If he comes onto the market, I have to be interested. His initial chat has to be with Swansea, because he had a good period there.”
Rodgers revealed that he met the Swans chairman Huw Jenkins to discuss the matter of the player’s availability in the transfer market, but also assured him that he will talk to Sigurdsson to discuss his future with the new manager before taking any final
decision.
Rodgers has won the plaudits of different managers and players from across the board for introducing a new brand of football style in the Premier League, likened by many to that of Spanish giants http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604.
The 39-year old vowed to introduce his new ideas and philosophy at Liverpool and pointed out that despite being one of the best defensive units in the English league, the Reds need to improve on their conversion rate.
He continued, “They need more goals in the team. I think that’s the key. Whether that’s going to involve bringing players in or adapting the style to have a more high pressing game we’ll see.”
The Irishman also highlighted the fact that clubs in the Premier League tend to fancy foreign managers, and indicated that he aimed at introducing a blend of different styles in order to meet the requirements of continental competitions.
He added, “I wanted to show that British managers can get teams to play the way continental teams do, and that we have players who can adapt to that. I would say my style is a fusion.”
