  1. Keep in mind that Tuscany is a region, and is quite large.  There are many places to visit there.  However, from Rome, the easiest would be to look into some of the wonderful towns in southern Tuscany, like Montepulciano, Chiusi, etc.

It is extremely easy to get to these places by train, and will take about an hour and a half from Rome.

Here is a page with some great places to look at in southern Tuscany:

  2. I booked my train from Rome to Bologna online before leaving the UK. I also bought a ticket for a day trip to Anzio when I was there. Both were easily purchased. The only thing to remember is that you have to use the little stamping machines at the end of the platform before boarding the train - just watch other people doing it. Oh, and try to find a busy carriage to sit in, because there are some dodgy characters who ride the Italian train system, especially in the South.
