Round Stone with Hole Through It?

I found this item on the banks of the Tallapoosa River near Horseshoe Bend State Park. It is smooth and round with a flat bottom. It has a hole through it. One of the holes is approximately 3/4 of an inch. The hole on the flat side is 1/4 of an inch. Does anyone have an idea what it might be?

  1. could be a mill stone for grinding corn etc. Usually the grain gets fed down the centre, and the flour works its way up the sides. also could be used for grinding herbs or pigments.

    get it to a museum

  2. Stones like this are formed when sand and sediment settle into a natural depression in a rock in a riverbed. Through the scouring action of the sand, a hole is literally drilled through the rock powered by the motion of the water in the river. The rock has probably weathered quite a bit since the hole was formed.

  3. A rock
