Question:

Roundup ready corn seed?

A farmer gave me a partial bag of RR corn. I grow it in a hobby farm, about an acres worth. Now I'm out of seed. Will the corn produced by these seeds be Roundup resistant, if I saved some of the seeds from this years crop and planted them next year?

  1. I'm not sure, but I would guess yes. The problem is that what you describe is illegal. Monsanto owns a patent on Roundup Ready technology, and planting seeds that you save is illegal. Monsanto collects a Tech Fee on all bags of Roundup Ready seed, and they don't like it when they aren't given the chance to collect it.

That being sai, the likelihood of your getting caught planting saved seed on the type of acreage you're talking about is very low. But, open pollinated seed will not produce the same vairiety that you plant this year. Hybrid corn is the result of two different parents of inbred lines.

  2. EBOLA and PRE-CANCEROUS cells???  Sowht F, where do you get your information from?  The Roundup gene comes from a soil bacteria, not ebola!  Roundup kills plants by blocking the amino acid processes that produce sugars inside the plant.  That's why a roundup sprayed plant dies rather slowly, without those essential sugars it literally starves to death.  The Roundup gene found in the bacteria is immune to the amino acid blocking properties of Roundup.  When spliced into the DNA of an otherwise suceptible plant, it basically provides a "detour" around the blocked gene, much like a temporary bridge detour around a failed bridge allows traffic to continue on unaffected.

Remember that just because a fact is found on the internet or in a book or magazine, that doesn't necessarily make it true.

  3. Don't use your own seed. You will get a decrease in yield all of the plants may or may not be Roundup Ready, not to mention it is not worth the risk of being caught. If you want to plant Roundup Ready, pay the price for new seed. If you want to save your own seed get one of the old corn varieties and stay away from hybrids.

  4. I concur with Bob B.

I know of people who saved back patented seed weed and got caught. But your not large enough to get caught.

And don't listen to the liberal anti GMO BS that keeps flashing up on the website. Some people need a better cause to stand for in life!

  5. Be careful using Roundup ready corn (Which is owned and manufactured by a mega corporation named Monsanto), That is unless you enjoy law suits that will bankrupt you and your family.

Roundup ready corn has been Genetically modified. To make GM Roundup ready corn and other GM products, Monsanto uses Ebola virus and pre-cancer type cells from plant tumors...

They are also claiming ownership on "life" and has applied for a patent on the farm Pig. (Links below).
