  1. rugby is actually really popular in NY.  check out you local closest city - they most likely have a team and then you can really play!!  im from rochester area and i know rochester has a team, binghamton has a team, buffalo, syracuse i think does...google/ yahoo search it!  just about every SUNY school has a rugby team- you can always go watch!

you can play a version of 7's, which is played in the summer.  the basics- 7 people per side- ball must be passed backwards.  anyone infront of the ball is off-sides.  players line up offensively in a diagonal pattern to receive the ball and stay onsides.  you cna kick forward, but the kicker must put everyone onsides by running past them or the others must retreat to behind where the kick was made. hmmm theres a lot thats hard to explain... go to the web site below.....

  2. Rugby pick up is called "7 a side", or "touch rugby" as there is no hard contact in it, the latter is advised to play with friends. The rules are simple: you advance the ball only by running (that means you can only pass it backwards and you cannot kick it) you must evade the defense´s touchs you your legs. When you are touched, you must immediately pass it or ground it so the defense (opposing team) has to fall back 5 yards and another member of your team grabs it and passes it. The team with most tries scored at the end wins. A try is grounding the ball with your hands or arms to the other team´s ingoal (behind the H, but theres no need for one in touch).

Forward passes, knock-ons and 5 touches are penalized with a turn-over (although you can steal it in mid-game if you stick to the rules, much like in football).
