  1. I am a setter for my volleyball teams, but i used to play libero too. So you usually go in for middle in the back row. In California liberos can serve but i guess thats a little different. You cannot go front row. You are allowed to go in at any times without substitutions. A libero is usually the best passer and is always planted in middle back for defense. and you get to wear a different colored jersey!! hoped that helped

  2. In addition to not serving the ball, you can't play front row and all backrow rules apply (like you can't jump in front of the 10 foot line)

You can however go in for any person, not just one in the back.

  3. Here is information from wikipedia.

    "The Libero

In 1998 the libero player was introduced internationally, the term meaning free in Italian is pronounced LEE-beh-ro (rather than lih-BEAR-oh); the NCAA introduced the libero in 2002.[15] The libero is a player specialized in defensive skills: the libero must wear a contrasting jersey color from his or her teammates and cannot block or attack the ball when it is entirely above net height. When the ball is not in play, the libero can replace any back-row player, without prior notice to the officials. This replacement does not count against the substitution limit each team is allowed per set, although the libero may be replaced only by the player whom they replaced. The libero may function as a setter only under certain restrictions. If she/he makes an overhand set, she/he must be standing behind (and not stepping on) the 3-meter line; otherwise, the ball cannot be attacked above the net in front of the 3-meter line. An underhand pass is allowed from any part of the court.

The libero is, generally, the most skilled defensive player on the team. There is also a libero tracking sheet, where the referees or officiating team must keep track of who the libero subs in and out for. There may only be one libero per set (game), although there may be a different libero in the beginning of any new set (game).

Furthermore, a libero is not allowed to serve, according to international rules, with the exception of the NCAA women's volleyball games, where a 2004 rule change allows the libero to serve, but only in a specific rotation. That is, the libero can only serve for one person, not for all of the people for whom she goes in. That rule change was also applied to high school play soon after."

  4. To be a libero you cant be team captain cant serve the ball in club ball but the libero can serve the ball in school ball atleast in my state and they also cant play back row.

To be a libero you are generally the quickest on the team the best passer on the team and most liberos are pretty short.

  5. Please read the answer by Me.  And then please read the answer by me.  (Sorry, I could not resist.)

The answer is completely correct.  There are some common misconceptions.  I will stress them below.

The correct pronunciation is LEE be roh from the Italian word Libre.

The Libero may never attack the ball if the ball is completely above the height of the net.  It does not matter if they are in front of the attack line or behind the line.  The back row players may attack the ball if they are behind the line.  Most Liberos that attack the ball do not get called for it.  That is because the ball is at least partially below the height of the net.  Not because they are behind the line.

The Libero may serve in US women's colleges, high schools and junior high schools only.  They may not serve anywhere else in the world.

  6. I am a libero! =]

Here are our rules (according to our state, maryland)

    1) You CAN Serve (this year it changed)

    2) You can't play front row

    3) You have to be quick and a good passer

    4) Usually pretty short

    5) You can't spike the ball if you pass the 10 foot line

    6) Have to wear a different color jersey

Then there are a bunch of rules that your coaches have to follow, not necessarily you, but they will tell you about them.
