Question

There are a couple of questions here.

Does Russia have ownership of South Ossetia? Is there some kind of history behind Georgia and South Ossetia or are they just trying to conquer more land?

What makes little Georgia believe that can take on the much, much larger Russia?

Russia does not have ownership of South Ossetia, and it does not have ownership of the North Ossetia. The Ossetians are in their own right its own country.

After the Break up of the Soviet Union the borders were drawn and S.Ossetia ended up in Georgia, it never wanted to be there. Georgia was supposed to have a referendum for all its newly acquired territories, but it never gave this to the S.Ossetians, or the Abhazia region. Therefore they rebelled against them. Russia has always supported the Territorial integrity of Georgia, but it has always said, that any military action on the region will cause Russian intervention. This is because the South Ossetia is formed of 90 percent Russian population. Russia has no interest in acquiring the new territory, but it has interest in protecting the Russian population in the region, so now they are only defending to what they had said before. If you go back 1 year, you will notice that Russia had issued a statement to Georgia, "any attack on the S.Ossetia region, will be a suicide for the Georgian army, and its nation". It is also important to point out that the Georgian president knew this and still went ahead.

The North Ossetia region, is intergrated into Russia, under a Russian convention act of 1993, where the people of the area had agreed to be a part of Russia, using their currency and being directly accountable to the Russian government. However they also calimed a status of a Republic (Russia has 26 within itself) where the people have their own government to elect and that the government controll the area with minimal intervention from the Russian government.

Georgia does not believe that it can take on Russia, even with its natural mountanious border they will still get wiped out with in hours if Russia mounted a full military attack on Georgia. Keep in mind Russia has not declared war on Georgia, whereas Georgia has. The bigger picture is that Georgia wants to be a part of the UN and the EU, they are backed by the US. They are making a big scene where they are being "invaded" and need protection, later they will be happy to accept US trops on their soil, this will only to contain Russia within borders.

Oh did i forget to mention that the US buys alot of Crude Oil from Georgia becasue they have a big piplenie running to the Black Sea.

P.S i am sick and tired of seeing people refer to Russia as the Communist country with no morals. The USSR has fallen a long time ago, and ppl still talking about the KGB, which does not exist anymore. Get over it, Russia is not what it used to be, Russia is a loving nation, and you don't have to go far to see this. In the Georgian conflict, look how Russian soilders are putting their own life at risk transportig the refugees in their BMP and walking around them making sure the civilians are safe. Look how Russian people have accepted the reefugees in Vladikavkaz and how they are brining food and clothes to these people who lost their homes and lively hoods. It seems that you do not want to hear these things and that you prefer to hear all the bad stuff like russia attack, russia kills, russia scams, russia is the bad guy. They really are not. Look how open the Russians are, they will always listen, they will always help. But when you start killing their people, they will not just stand by, they will retaliate, and it will be them who impose their morals on you. Their are a strong nation and will fight for the motherland untill all of them are killed, but never surrender.

No the people who own it are the people who live there, Georgia is taking a risk expecting US support, Russia took the challenge as its control of large energy resources largest after OPEC, as an economy SU are one of the new emerging superpowers whilst USA is a dieing one dependent on China (SU biggest Ally) economy in Russian etc, Russia is flexing its muscles and that's how the power in the world shifts.

"Little" Georgia might not stand a chance in your eyes against Russia, but then again the Russians got their asses handed to them for 10+ years straight  in "Little" Afghanistan back in the 80s-and that was when they were part of the so called great Soviet Union.

Ownership? No. Most of ossetian people have russian passports and citizenship, because they work in Russia. So, people of Ossetia are more likely to join Russia than Georgia. But they want to be independent and it's their right. So, no ownership.

What makes little Georgia believe that can take on the much, much larger Russia? - US support. Money, weapons, war adwisors and satellite fire control (russian soldiers are wondering the accuracy of georgian artillery even at night)

South Ossetia wants to be independent from Georgia. Georgia does not want that. That is it.

What da f..ck are U talking bout? All the time south osetia was a territory of georgia but some years before osetians threw out all the georgian citizens from there and declared that they wanted to be a part of russia. After that separatists never stopped firing. And after so many years georgians got sick of it and answered with fire only once. and now It's promoted as genocide. was it a right thing what osetians did?

It kind of goes along with ethnicity,culture, and all that. The people in the area are more closely related to Russia than Georgia. They were part of Georgia and then broke apart and formed a quasi independent country. Now Georgia is trying to take it back and Russia feels as if it is their own people. Not to mention Russia wants to have a sphere of influence in the region. So they countered the attack. Now we have a full scale old school conventional fight underway.

South Ossetia belongs to georgia, its georgian territory.

Yes, our population is very small. But we are very brave people and try protect our territory. Everybody knew this would happen some day. Geogia tried to get back the territory peacefully during couple of years but nothing. However, even this time Georgia was not ready for this war but Ossetians started it quietly. Georgia did not have other choice than to fight them back. But, if Russians are so concerned about Ossetian people ok, let them take their ossetians to their country and take care of them there and give us our teritory, whatever belongs to us.

I'm really proud of my georgians. Such a small population and fighting so bravily for their country, their people and for the future of our kids.

Russia should stop aggression against Georgia. They are bombing different cities and small suburbs of Georgia, killing innocent people.

But only God is a judge.  Everybody will get whatever they deserve, Georgia or Russia. And all of us will see it with our own eyes.

what russian army did to the same kind of republic like Ossetia, to Chechnya. You also need to obtain the video of that time, I'm talking about Chechnya.  You will understand how savagely russain army killed chechen people.

You need to learn what kind of organisation is KGB and its leader, today's prime minister (former Russian president) V. Putin.

Please learn about all these facts (whatever I just listed) and you will understand what kind of nation is Russia, what kind of peacemakers they are.

1) The Conflict is over the break away region of Georgia called South Ossetia.  The Media states that Georgia was counter-attacking sepratists in the region.  I believe it was to reclaim South Ossetia as their own.

2) Georgia doesn't believe that they can take on Russia.  In fact, they didn't expect Russia invading in the first place.

3) Russia backs South Ossetia, it doesn't own it

Georgia stiked the south ossetian region and russia defend south ossetia. South ossetia wants indepence just like kosovo wanted indepence. It is the same thing that happened with the US and kosovo. Continuing on to my point, Georgia knew that russia was going to defend ossetia but they attacked anyway. Russia had troops built up on the border. Georgia is trying to start ww3 by assuming the Us will get into the conflict as well. They attack ossetia because they assumed the US would help, simply because russia is the "enemy". The is the first time sense ww2 that russia has been right in declaring war.

Yes there is a history between Russia, Georgia, and S.O.

Georgia is a former Soviet republic (needless to say their relations with Russia have been strained) SO has been wanting independence and possibly becoming a Russian state ever since the Georgian civil war of 1991. SO also has access to oil-pipelines, there politicians voted to reunite with North Ossethia, a Russian state. Plus, Georgia was set to join NATO

You're going to hear a lot of conservative pols blaming Russia soley, which isn't correct. No doubt Russia is in no way opposed to gaining more access to oil but Georgia attacked SO, in the process they killed Russian civilians and soldiers. Believe it or not Russia is responding justly. If we had peace keeping soldiers in Columbia and Venezuela killed some of them what would the USA do to the Chavez regime?

My cat and dog would always do their best to annoy one another and provoke conflicts so that I would punish the other one. Usually I went harder on my dog because he was bigger, (70lbs bigger) but there would come a time when I could not dismiss my cat as innocent. (i.e. she would jump on his head and start beating the c**p out of him) She scamper over to me with the dog in pursuit; much to her suprise I would look at him and say "free reign", that means "you can do whatever the h**l you want for the next 15 minutes".

So in this instance, since Georgia killed Russian soldiers, I would say to Russia "free reign."

I think it is mainly the fault of the stupid prime minister of Georgia who thought USA would help and let thousands die while Americans are sleeping in their warm homes... Then, that guy asks"what are you waiting to happen to come and help" to the western world like somebody promised him help.

Hallo all. I am from Russia, and i know truth.

Georgia was attack Russians peace keepers in South Osetia. It was a start of war. Now Russia can to erase Georgia from a face of earth.

Now from south of Russia to Georgia moved ~650 tanks and a lot of another military units.

Just facts: Russia did not initiate military action.  Georgia's forces has bombed and destroyed the region's capital and 1400 civilians in just the 1st day.  There can be no justification for that.  DO NOT forget this point. For the rest, see the videos below.

Talking about SO's belonging isn't the right way of discussion.

So forget about Russian's/Georgia's ownership pretending and see facts:

1) russian solders were sitting in SO for a long time as pease makers...and were attacked be georgians

2) there rewe NO aggression from russian side, but Georgia started bombing everything and everybody...as a result, georgians has killed 3 russian peace makers and wounded about 20 soldiers (for now)

3) For those who believe in "evil Russian agressors" - just try to see all these news from the other hand (watch Russian/Ossetian news - you'll learn a bunch of interesting facts American news-makers does NOT include in reports)

When Georgian millitaries kill russian peace makers its allright, yeah, it doesnt matter!! When bombing osetian civilians its ok, go on!! But then russia tryed to defend its own people, everyone said: russian millitaries attacked Georgia. What the h**l?! Stop it!
