Russian tortoise advice?

I have a 3 month old baby RT. I think he has a pretty good diet, eating endive and mallow, romaine lettuce, carrot, kale, alfalfa, etc etc. But I'm worried I'm overfeeding him. How do I know if he's getting fat? Also can he eat tomato or apple? I get conflicting advice about this online... Thanks

  1. he will know when to stop eating and just ask your local pet store about the apple and the tomato hope that helps

  2. Please don't listen to your first 2 answers, I've been raising all kinds of tortoises for 13 years including Russian and you'll be able to tell if he's fat if between his tail and his back leg if the area there is coming out rather than curving in also look around the armpit area and it's the same thing. It's o.k. if he's a little fat, but don't give him apple or tomato. Good Luck and fruit should only be served on Occasion.

  3. All fruit (although fruit is often recommended, its sugar content can lead to parasite blooms....just not worth it) the exception is apples due to the high quantity of pectin....but still not frequently.
