I have been taking ice skating lessons for 5 weeks now and have just passed level one and two of the skate uk course and going into level 3. I have had my own skates for 2 weeks now and altogether wore them for an hour and there is already spots of rust on my blades mainly at the bottom and on one skate there is a pattern from the skate guards, is this normal? And what can i do to get it off and prevent it in the future?

  1. oh my gosh, please do NOT just throw on soakers and leave them, that's prime example of them rusting.

when you finish skating, try to dry off your blades as much as possible with towels. they will fog up again, just try to dry them as much as you can. put on the soakers, bring them home, and indoors. take off the soakers when you get home, and dry them again, as they should be room temperature by then, and leave the soakers off. the reason for that is they will hold the moisture that is left over, and that will rust the skates.

for the current rust, it should just be the blade part itself that rusted, not the chrome. you can either sharpen it off, or something i've heard others do, squeeze lemons onto a towel and use that to get rid of the rust. make sure to rinse off the blade after though.
