  2. saccharum is the medieval Latin word for sugar.  The root appears in  the saccharimeter polariscope used for measuring sugars.

    The ending -in or -ine (as in serpentine - like a serpent) was added to the root of saccharum to make saccharine - a coal tar based sweet substance, not sugar but like it.
