Question:

Safe For Rodents?

I have a pair of Degus' who love their running wheel.

The problem is the wheel squeaks and it honestly sounds like a rusty swing from a horror movie. Is there any kind of lubricant (i.e. WD-54) that I can use on the joint of the wheel in order to stop the squeak but it will not harm them if they happen to l**k or chew near the area?

  1. You can use WD40. The trick is to remove the wheel, spray it then wipe off the excess. Let it dry. Give it a quick wipe again with a wet rag and put it back in for them. If you can afford it, you could buy them a new one, too. That's another option.

When I was in school, we had a couple of degus in the classroom....and they had a squeaky wheel. The above instructions is what my instructor did and she's been a Vet Tech for over 30 years.

  2. vegetable oil works,

its totally harmless for them and mine love to l**k it.

but once every while, it starts to squeak again and i have to oil it.

  3. well take the wheel of the stand and put tape on the prongs of it and it works great

  4. Olive oil is safe and effective

  5. Don't use anything you wouldn't eat yourself if they can get to it. Just put some olive oil or suchlike on and wipe off any excess.

  6. olive oil or vegetable oil is best. wd40 puts off fumes which could be toxic. You can also try getting a silent spinner.
