Question:

Safe and Unsafe areas of Auckland?

My husband, young son, and I are looking to relocate to Auckland. We've heard that some areas of the city are a bit on the scary side. Can anyone give us some advice on the best areas for a young family to live and the areas to steer away from? Just a list of good and bad would do the trick LOL. But if you want to be more specific, places where we could get nice housing at a good price (rental) and there are nice parks etc.

Thanks

  1. "Auckland" is actually a combination of 4 cities.

    Nothing wrong with Waitakere City.

Nothing wrong with North Shore City.

Nothing wrong with Auckland City proper.

Nothing wrong with parts of Manukau City, but you'll have to be familiar with the territory to know which parts. Suggest that you stay away from Manukau until you get to know the area.

  2. Stay away from the brown areas, like in most countries the brown people have the least amount of money so the crime  rate is higher.

Quality and price go hand in hand, renting is cheaper at the moment because of high interest on mortgages.

Look around there are good and safe places out there.

  3. I agree with gypsy, South Auckland (Manurewa, Manukau, Otara, Mangere & even Mt Roskill (South) are dangerous. There is high gang activity there & for someone with a young family etc... it's a risk.

I hate to sound all morbid but it's quite common there. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/1/stor...

On the other hand, places like Browns Bay, Glen Eden, Massey, Rothesay Bay & Long Bay are safe places to be for families & there are lots of beaches, schools around.

I know in Torbay, the rent is very reasonable because like all other places, the further you get from the central city, the better the rates.

  4. I think most areas are pretty safe but like any where there are places that are a bit shady.

South Auckland. (Maunrewa, Papatoetoe,Otara, And Manakau) has quite a prominant Gang Culture but saying that I lived there for three years and was fine you just learn the areas and street to steer clear of.

The central city and eastern suburbard are really nice but pretty pricey.

My pick would the Shore (North of the habour bridge) its really nice and id say as safe as any where and awsome views lots of safe beachs and parks .the prices are still pretty expensive for bying but if your looking for rentals they are out there just need to be hunted out

Some really good school but still close enough to grammar, epsom, kings, dio, dillworth if you want the private schools.

good luck and i hope it helped

  5. I reckon the nicest place is probably the north shore and the worst is south Auckland

  6. Places like Otara, Manukau, Otahuhu, Manukau.. have a bad reputation. So stay away from those places. Places like North Shore, Ponsonby, Epsom, Botany are the more expensive. North Shore is considered the safest city in New Zealand.
