  1. Keep all fingers and thumbs clear.

All I can say is be careful.

  2. make sure the end you hit is not mushroomed over as bits can chip off and hit you

  3. The most important and probably the only safety tip you will need, which will sound obvious, is to keep both hands behind the cutting edge at all times. This way you will NEVER cut yourself with a chisel. Use a wooden headed mallet to tap out the shavings with the chisel and you will not hit your fingers.

  4. Since you didn't say what kind of chisel (wood or masonry) here's a few general tips.  With a masonry chisel ALWAYS wear eye protection, with the wood, it couldn't hurt but wood chips don't usually go flying.  If it's a masonry chisel but you haven't bought it yet, then try to buy the ones with a big rubber hand guard to protect those fingers and if not try wearing some heavy leather gloves.  If it's a wood chisel, then it should be razor sharp so cloves would also be a good idea.  With both chisels, but especially the wood chisel, be very careful about letting the chisel slip when you hit it.  The masonry chisel could give you a good bruise or possibly even break a finger, the wood chisel could cause a very serious cut or puncture.  Take your time, plan every move, keep band aids handy, and don't be in a hurry.

  5. Always push away from your body. Make sure that if you slip you're not going to slip into your own flesh.

Use a mallet and not a hammer.

Oddly enough, the sharper the chisel is, the safer it is.

You do not want to fight a dull tool.

    Maybe this will help.

  6. Safety glasses and body covered. Make sure you remove burrs from the chisel end so they do not fly off when hit with the hammer. Wearing gloves will "soften" the blow if you miss the chisel with the hammer and protect from flying chips. Keep children away.

  7. along with the above, I use the SIDE of the hammer to hit the chisel. It's a bigger area so I don't miss the chisle or hit it and "glance off" it.

  8. Don't hit your fingers or thumbs with the hammer or chisel? Wear safety goggles if you're scared of getting hit in the eye.
