Question:

Salt bad for gerbils?

i keep reading that salt is bad for gerbils and other rodents, but at wal-mart they sell salt wheels for rodent the package says hamsters and gerbils need a certain amount of salt.

i know just because its at wal-mart doesn't mean i should give it to my pets. just looking for more information

  1. I have had gerbils and I always kept a salt wheel in their cage. Salt is an important mineral for them, it's not bad unless they consume the whole wheel in only a couple days, which they won't, most likely.

    If they only nibble at it every once in a while, it's absolutely fine.

    I recommend keeping a mineral wheel in there too, which is even more nutritious for your gerbil.


  2. well most animals need salt to live. but its probably not a good idea to feed it straight salt, theres probably everything a gerbil needs like vitamins and minerals in gerbil food or pellets.

  3. an over amount of anything for a gerbil is bad....mine is lucky and he's almost 4!!!

    a little salt wont hurt anyone or thing needs it to live but i wouldn't trust anything from walmart.....

    i've given him everything from cherry kool aid to ham and cheese hot pockets....only a little though.
