i've recently noticed what looks to be ick in my fry tank, my temp is around 82, would it be safe to add salt to try and kill this (would it harm the fry), or would you just try adjusting the temp a bit higher? What would you recommend?

  1. You really need to get ich medicine.  The amount of salt you would need to kill off ich would kill your fish first.  Just adding a few tespoons to the tank does nothing to kill ich or even ward it off.

Salt dips can remove the ich from the fish but not the tank.

Ich medicine is really the best way to take care of ich

  2. Keep your temperature where it is,yes add salt if you use table salt it has to be UN IODIZED,that is what we use in the pet shop to cut costs.Luck to you.

  3. Bumping up the temperature will do nothing but allow the infection to progess (and kill the fish) more quickly.  Without something to interrupt the parasite's life cycle, it will continue.  Getting the salt concentrations to about 1 ppt (part per thousand) will kill the parasite in its free swimming stages and have little affect on the fish, though it may strain the biofilter and kill/damage plants or inverts.  To achieve 1 ppt, you need about 8 grams of salt per gallon of water.

To state that dips can be effective in treating Ich but prolonged baths cannot demonstrates the utmost ignorance and total incomprehension of the parasite's biology.

  4. Salt really wont do the trick.

Turning the tempreture up speeds up the proccess of the spots dropping of the fish.

I would use White spot medication but at half the normal dose. That way it wont hurt the fry and should definatly kill the white spot. Good luck
