Salvador Cabanas testifies in Paraguay
Paraguay’s national football player Salvador Cabanas has testified regarding his shooting at a pub in Central American Mexico.
The judge who is overseeing the proceedings of the case claimed that the player had damaged his memory as a result of the attack. Despite being on the road to recovery since the occurrence of the incident at the start of the year, he is still haunted by the brutal attack by unidentified gunmen.
Cabanas, who was one of the leading members of the national team in their build up for towards the World Cup, escaped death after being shot in the head. Despite the passage of eight months, he is still undergoing treatment for the injuries.
The Paraguayan soccer player’s memory has been diminished by the violent attack and this was confirmed by the Paraguayan judge.
Cabanas represented a local club in the Mexican soccer league known as America. He was the leading striker for both his club and the national team.
At the hearing, he told Judge Pedro Mayor Martinez that he cannot recall who attacked him, and despite trying his best, he has not been able to figure out the circumstances around the attack.
Cabanas added that he did try and co-operate with the Mexican establishment last January, but was at odds on the identity of the attackers.
"He only mentions vague memories that he's been having of that moment but he doesn't necessarily remember concretely faces or names. The responses are coherent based on what one would expect from a person who has a diminished memory since that event. He has a brilliant memory regarding prior situations," Martinez clarified.
The striker was shot at a club called the ‘Bar Bar’ which is located in Mexico City. The incident occurred on 25th January as the striker took time off his busy schedule in a bid to unwind.
Cabanas, who is 29 years old, told the judge that he did feel the impact of a bullet, but that is all that he can recall as far as the incident was concerned.
"The defence attorneys don't participate in this moment. They will have all the information which will be revealed by the Paraguayan court. What we've done is guarantee a bit the impact that this information could have by having security forces participate," added Martinez.
It remains to be seen as to what the outcome of the investigations reveal, and if any of the culprits are apprehended. The master mind behind the assault is an allegedly a drug gang member who remains one of the most sought after men in the country.
Cabanass, who went through a near death experience, claimed that he was lucky to be alive. He was hospitalized in Mexico City for nearly 40 days and is presently being treated in Buenos Aires, the capital city of Argentina.
After the attacks, the striker travelled to his home town off and on. Luckily for him, he has appeared in a few soccer games as the long road to recovery reaches its end.
In his absence, the Paraguayans performed admirably well in the soccer World Cup last month, yet his presence might have taken them beyond their quarter-final effort.
