Question:

Satellite radio question?

My radio says XM radio ready, how much can I expect to spend to get everything I need and to get it installed?

Our small town local stores quoted a price of $500 for everything and installation... that seems oh so high to me? Anyone get this and how much did you pay? Was it worth it?

Thanks for your input! :)

  1. I think "XM Ready" just means the electronics are in place for you if you want to install a radio that would include XM. It also means you could control it from your steering wheel if you have that option and as Mom says, it means there's a button that says SAT near FM, AM, TAPE, CD etc.

It does not necessarily mean the radio in your dash will pick up XM without some modifications. To be sure, ask the dealer or look in the paperwork that came with the car. If it truly is ready to go, there should be an instruction sheet from XM explaining where to call and giving you all the serial numbers to get started with your subscription.

If it does require installation you may be able to get it cheaper by finding an audio specialist working on his own time through www.craigslist.com.  Once you get there it's self-explanatory. Make SURE the guy has satellite installation experience.

You may be better off just buying a new portable from either XM or Sirius. XM makes one that has a built-in FM transmitter that will hook into your car stereo system wirelessly (well, you may need a car-charger for long trips). Now you can listen at home, office, car, jogging, etc.

  2. if your radio is xm ready you just need to subscribe to xm radio

    Call 1-800-XM-RADIO (1-800-967-2346)

Ask them if they can direct you to an authorized installer to put in the antenna, the sattelite antenna is all you need if this is for your car you didn't say if it was home or car!

home units already have the antenna, just subscribe

  3. Does your car say "satellite ready"? That just means that you have the space and some of the wires. My car is a 2005, and it has a button that says "SAT". When I bought it 2 years ago, I didn't want the satellite radio, but 6 months later of course i did! I called the dealership and asked how much to actually get the radio in my car and they quoted me at $475. I thought being "satellite ready" meant that all I needed was a subscription...obviously not!! I just got a separate XM unit and an FM transmitter and it's not great reception, actually it pretty much doesn't work at all:(  Good luck!!
