The tactician added that his side was way below par in the first-half but they came back brilliantly in the second period to take the game from Bayern.
“We wanted to win the title as a gift for the club and the fans. If you consider that 13,000 people wanted to see the game, you know how high the expectation levels are. In the first half we were put off somewhat by the fantastic
backdrop and our play was scrappy. After the interval Bayern were the ones affected,” Elgert was quoted as saying in an interview.
The manager admitted that Bayern Munich certainly had the better team on paper in comparison to Schalke but hailed his side’s effort to down one of the best teams in the competition in the final.
“They had little left to offer even though they were the better footballing team. It's a difficult to beat a side as good as they are but if I thought anyone could do it then only Wolfsburg and us,” he concluded.
