Question:

School Names?

My daughter is seven and wants to come up with a school name. So, we worked on it for about a week. She made a school flag, motto, and even cute shirts with the school colors.

Is it legal to use your school name or do you need to do something to make it offical? You know, like on Girl Scout applications or papers for the rec deparment? I just don't want to get in trouble for trying to step on anyones toes.

  1. In KY we have to pick a name as legally, we are a private school. You do not need to register the name if it is for your personal use.

  2. It is perfectly fine, but not necessary, to use your own school name as long as the name is not already an official name of something else, or another school.

We simply put home school on any application that requires the name of a school, upon graduation we will state ********* (last name) Academy.

  3. I can't see why you can't name your school the same as another one, as long as you don't try to imply that your student went to the other school.  How many public schools are named after JFK?

In Illinois, some homeschool advocates also recommend naming your school and printing stationery with a letterhead, to establish your homeschool as a "private school."  Some state Supreme Court cases have declared that homeschools are private schools and are entitled to the same legal rights as any other private school.

  4. We named our homeschool, and anywhere it asks where she goes to school we put our school name.  I usually put parentheses in quotation marks, just because I want them to know we homeschool-not something we are ashamed of, that is why we named it-to show our pride.

  5. We call ours the school of one!

  6. We do the same as busymom - our hs name is (last name) Academy, and I'm not aware of any private school that uses that name.  When we need to put a school name down on something, that's what we use.  Otherwise, we just indicate "homeschool".

As long as you're not using the name of a school that already exists in your area (or an online school), you're fine.  I've never heard of anyone coming back at a homeschooler for using a school name.

    Hope that helps! :-)

  7. You can name your school anything you'd like, but if you want to be taken seriously and not raise any red flags with the state, make it an official sounding name.  We named ours after our street and then added "Academy."  We have friends who dubbed themselves "The Little Red Schoolhouse."

  8. Here's a site I came across that gives HS name ideas (to begin your own brain storming!) & some benefits for naming your school (ie: school supply discounts, etc.):
