My dad would like my family and I to travel around australia in a motor home for two to four years. We are seriously considering home schooling. How would we go about homeschooling while traveling. I am in highschool (grade 8) and my brother is in year 5. What options are available for us regarding schooling. We thoght about School of The air, but I don't like it, and we will be traveling out of South Australia anyway. Could i do my schooling online?

  1. You could do online or you can just use regular books and the experiences you will have.

  2. That sounds like fun!  You could complete your schooling using any homeschool curriculum your parents choose.

Here is a list of different ways to homeschool, along with popular curriculum providers:

A great thing to do would be to study different areas you're visiting.

    Here's some information on carschooling.

    Have fun!

  3. Homeschooling would really be your only option.

You would be able to do your schooling online if you had internet connection in the RV.  I am assuming that you would be going to remote parts of Australia, and satellite access would be your only option.  It is an option, but quite expensive.

I am not familiar with School of the Air, so I can not comment on that.

If your parents can obtain a Scope & Sequence (available from many homeschool curriculum publishers), then they could create a curriculum for you by borrowing or purchasing books.  Purchasing a traditional curriculum is another plan.  It would come with all of the materials you need.

I think that just traveling on its own would have a lot of educational opportunities-history, geography, sociology.  You can get a lot of math by figuring how far you drive, how long you spend driving, how many gallons of gas you use and how much it cost, etc. etc.  While you are in motion in the RV would be a good time to get some good literature in.

If you will have a portable TV/DVD, that would be great for watching videos with educational content.

I am not sure what is available in Australia, but I know that DirecTV has options for RVs and vehicles, and even a little briefcase unit for camping and such.  There are many shows on television that are educational, from the news (to follow current events) to Animal Planet (a lot of science), to the History and Discovery Channels.  The Do-It-Yourself Network and Food Network can be used in a Home Ec manner.

I hope you all have a lot of fun!  Our family plans to spend time traveling around the U.S. in an RV one day, and I hope that we get a chance to visit other countries.  China, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland and/or Scotland are on our list of places to visit.

  4. Definitely. There are a lot of online programs that offer classes that would meet those requirements. You just have to research the ones in your area and see which one would work best for you and your family.

  5. I think it sounds like a whole lot of fun and you could easily fit school into it.  You don't have to have an internet connection to homeschool.  We use a program called Sonlight.  We really like it and we take it everywhere with us. It's especially good if you are a literature lover.   Here's a link to the site:

You get everything you need for a whole year.  It's a little more expensive but all the legwork is done for you.  The schedules are also done for you.  We live in Canada and we have an RV.  We take our vacations in late spring and early autumn when all of the schools are still in or have gone back.  We have the choice of all the best campsites and we don't wait in line at any parks, museums, zoos or restaurants.  My kids and I sit at the table and do our schooling during the long boring hours of driving.  It works really well for us.  I hope this helps.
