My son has to do a paper for Science class on how climbing stairs affects blood flow. We've searched the internet but can't seem to find a direct answer. Can anyone help with this?

  1. any physical activity like running or climbing stairs will increase  the heart rate which will pump blood faster increasing the flow of the blood.

  2. Climbing the stairs will effect the blood flow in the following way:

Depending on how fast you are climbing the stairs, you heart will start pumping faster i.e. the heart rate will go up.

The deoxygenated blood (depleted of oxygen and carrying carbon dioxide) from the body parts will move towards the heart.

The deoxygeneated blood that goes to the heart is taken to the lungs where carbon dioxide from the blood is taken (we breathe it out) and replaced with oxygen (what we breathe in).

Now, the oxygenated blood (carrying oxygen) is taken back to the heart from where is is transferred to the different body parts.

It is like an ongoing cycle....

I hope this is helpful. Good Luck!!! :)

  3. As you expend more energy utilizing the muscles, moving your body, and climbing the stairs, the muscles and lungs require more oxygen. This causes the heart to beat faster and pump oxygenated blood to the organs and muscles at a faster rate. They need this oxygen as they convert the chemical energy of glucose in the muscle into mechanical energy for locomotion. C02 and H+ are created during the breakdown of glucose, and moved from the muscle via the blood and back out of the lungs. During all of this, the pH of the blood starts to drop a bit.

  4. I would just search for information on how exercise effects blood flow, and not specifically stair climbing.  Then just apply the information to climbing stairs as it is a strenuous activity and would have the same effects as exercise.

  6. Well, being that climbing stairs is a form of exercise, it will increase blood flow, as does most exercise.

  7. Climbing the stairs would require aerobic respiration, this would produce more carbon dioxide in the bloos increasing the adrenline in the blood. This would cause blood flow to increase to be able to provide ample oxygen to the muscles. Also the blood vessels to the gut would close down and the blood vessels to the skeletal muscles would dilate.
