we seem to have a problem with scorpions... and I was wondering if they live in colony's or nests...or if they are pretty independent and self sufficient...

we want to know so we can find out exactly where they are coming from.

THANKS

  1. They spend the day hiding in dark places -- wood piles, attics, crawl spaces -- and come out at night to eat bugs. They sting only in self-defense.

To prevent them from coming into a house -- the best solution for controlling them -- get rid of stacks of firewood, lumber, or rocks, and compost heaps; seal cracks around doors, windows, and along the house's foundation; and keep the interior free of spider webs and cockroaches (a scorpion will be less likely to visit if there's nothing for it to eat).

If that does not work call a professional exterminator

  2. Depends where you live and the habitat available. I live in the Midwest. Our scorpions are about 2" long and live in rocky areas. When our house was new, we had many in the basement, probably because of the humidity and crickets that were available.

Weather may play a role in your case. Extremes in heat, rain, and drought will bring animals and insects into buildings.

Remember, the smaller the pincher's, the more venomous the scorpion. Make sure if you have pets to keep them away from the scorpions.

  3. Scorpians don't bite they sting.

  4. There are many species of scorpions but split into 2 main groups, defined by their homes.  Some live holes and tend to walk around with their tails up over their backs.  The others live in layered materials and tend to walk around with the tails curled over sideways, not over their backs, sort of off to the side.  The live independently carrying their young.  At some point the young abandon the mother and spread out (I have seen this, a wall covered with dozens of baby scorpions each the size and shape of fingernail parings).

The best way to hunt them down is to go out at night with a black light.  They glow in ultraviolet light.  You can find them and their holes and poison them  You will have to be very persistent and reasonably careful.  All can be painful but almost none are fatal to healthy normal sized .people .  (some people have specific allergies to their poison so be careful).  If you manage to get rid of all of them you can expect some other pest.  If you keep a garden you will have to go to war with other insects after getting rid of the scorpions.

AN interesting but not very useful way to combat scorpions is with bats.  They are natural enemies and bats will kill them when they get a chance.
