My knowledge of volleyball is pretty limited, but I do know most of the rules and such. I have never really played the sport on a serious level but I do enjoying watching the game.

I am looking to scout volleyball (boys and girls), but I do not know where to start, like what criterion to judge and what to look for in players. So if you could give me some help I would appreciate it, thanks a bunch!

  1. Necesities:

Some one who hussles, Team player, Good attidude, Verbal on the court, doesnt let mistakes get the best of them etc. Good Grades and personality.

High jumper. Quick hard arm swing...trust me you want a player that is a GOOD HARD hitter.

    Wants:

A libero or DS who is Good passer who can give some direction to the ball with good form, some one who is smaart about the game and makes wise quick desions. A setter with good patient hands, a middle blocker who gets her hands on most blocks and can read and hit a quick set,   Outside hitter who can pass block and hit, Opposite who can hit and block, and also has good hands.

    Hoped it helped

    Can volley without lifting

    Move your feet

    Be ready for the ball

    etc

  3. Now, Ever wonder Why, has the basics for looking at player positions. Gordonmorrison was correct in the approach that you need to know what your scouting for. To build on what he said regarding scouting for competition. There are a lot of things in general to look at. What you want to do is make a chart or find one. This will give you a better understanding of what to look for with each opposing player on the competing team. There is a pretty good and simple chart found here:

    http://volleyball.about.com/library/week...

I use something a little more modified. Tracking each opponents play is key to finding the weaknesses of that team and how to best play against them.

Understanding all the rules of the game is a start, but its also good to understand the lingo too. I recently had to correct some of my junior players on the correct definition of an Ace. Even though you probably wont plan on being a referee, its good to take a class on it, you would be suprised on the Rules you think you know verse what is actual. Also there is different rules and regulations when playing high school and college, verse club and USAV ball. Hope I was able to add to the good help ing answers offered. Feel free to email me with anymore questions you might have.

  4. It really depends on what you are scouting.  Are you scouting to get players for your group?   Are you scouting to help your group beat other teams?

If you are scouting to get players for your group, Ever wonder WHY? has a great answer.  Hustle and attitude are things I would look for when I was trying to build a team.  Height would be nice, but you can work around a lack of height.  (I would rather have a short athlete with a great attitude than a tall person with a bad attitude.)  Being loud and positive is important.  Look for people that are not afraid to play the ball.  Look for people that are not afraid to play the ball late in the match.  Most players want to play the ball at 0-0, but it is a different player that wants to play the ball at 23-24.  Can they pass the ball?   Can they hit?  Can they move to play defense?  Those are questions that I would be asking if I was recruiting for my team.

If you are scouting to help your team win, you should look for different things.  When they hit, where do they hit?  Is it cross court every time or do they have a line shot?  Does the setter telegraph where the sets are going?  Do they dump the ball?  Who can pass the ball?  What kind of defense do they play?  Middle back or Rotation?  (I was doing this kind of scouting last weekend.  One player hit line hard and hit soft cross court.  Every one else hit cross court with a soft line shot.  And there is one player on every team that does not pass well.  She got many chances to work on her passing.)

I hope this helps.  If not, please feel free to email me for more information.
