Read chapter 58 of the book of Isaiah.  Also, according to Psalm 35:13, fasting can be used to humble yourself.  One more:  According to Matthew 17:21 and Mark 9:29 some demons can only be cast out by prayer and fasting.  Hope that helps ya!

"Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter-- when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?"  (Isaiah 58:6-7)

Mary, Queen of Peace, has requested at Medjugorje that people fast on bread and water every Wednesday and Friday.  The fasting can be offered to her for the conversion of sinners.
