Question:

Scuba diving: Hood thickness?

Hi, I'm looking to buy a separate wetsuit hood, and will be diving in the UK during the summer. What thickness should I go for, as I've seen 3 - 6.5mm?

Thanks for the help.

  1. In the UK in summer the water gets up to around 15C (doesn't sound warm compared to the Red Sea, does it?!)

I, personally, don't use a hood above around 10C as the initial intake of breath soon passes (a couple of seconds max).

When it gets cooler I use a very thin (2mm) hood which was made by Typhoon (I don't think they make them anymore).

That has proved to be good enough down to 3C (inland lake in winter).

It's all down to what you will be happy with but a good flexible fit is better than thickness of neoprene - IMHO.

    Safe diving!
