Question:

Seafood... is it good?

I like to try something new each year, and I've never tried seafood. What would be a great dish that could break me in? I'm not trying to go head first with something that is very fishy.

I get mixed reviews. Some say sushi, but what kind of sushi? Any suggestions that would go well with a glass of wine... or any alcohol?

  1. Sushi SUCKS ! Why would anyone pay to eat RAW fish ? Then they act cool and use the chop stix to eat with. Why can't you use a for like you do for everything else loser ..........

Oh, sorry, I got bent there for a sec..... I can't stand phony people.

I would suggest a nice stuffed flounder. Not too fishy and is a basic fish dish in most restaurants. Try something with crab in it. Crab goes well with a nice rose' or a light white wine. Lobster is usually expensive and doesn't taste like anything except the butter you dip it in.

You could always try a combination platter. You usually get a small piece of fish, a shrimp or two, a few scallops and a crab cake. That would give you a sampling of a few different things at once. The combo's are generally served fried ( everything breaded ) or broiled. I prefer broiled because it brings out the flavors of the items instead of covering them up with breadcrumbs .  In the northeast you can get a nice combo plate for around 25 - 35 dollars depending on the restaurant.

  2. I have never had sushi either, but my goal is to try it this year.  If you are just starting out with seafood I would try something with shrimp in it maybe shrimp scampi or a shrimp pasta.  Also Mahi Mahi is really good and it does not taste too fishy.

  3. Been eating seafood all my life, grew up in florida.  NEVER had sushi, I would try a shellfish first, crab, shrimp, scallops.  Lobster is very rich, Mussels are not that great.  If you want to try a fish  Halibut and Mahi Mahi are pretty good.  I personally don't like catfish I think they taste like dirt.  Shrimp is my favorite, try a dish that is prepared with a favored spice or dish ie; if you like pasta try shrimp alfredo, etc.

  4. Only sushi I eat is the California Roll.  It has vegetables and no raw meat.  I don't do the raw thing if you know what I mean.  I don't believe it is healthy.

  5. Try a shellfish first like shrimp or crab legs.  Shrimp kind of tastes like chicken and it doesn't look offensive (I'm not a fan of fish either).  Crab legs are good with some butter and all you need to do is boil them.  Make a small bowl filled with melted butter for dipping and your done.  It tastes like....  Butteriness (Not a word :o) ).  My first fish was Maui Maui and I was actually surprised because it didn't taste fishy.  It was kind of buttery too and I really liked it.  It was lightly seasoned and cooked with a bit of olive oil

  6. I love seafood but some fish have a stronger taste than others, which can be a turnoff for me.  I personally like flounder, shrimp, salmon, scallops, and oysters.  I love sushi too but I wouldn't try it if I'd never had seafood before.  I prefer my seafood to either be fried or grilled, with seasoning.

  7. Don't go for sushi.  It's not for the uninitiated.  if you wind up with something less than stellar, it could turn you off seafood altogether.  You need to have some experience, first.

Try shrimp scampi or some deep fried shrimp.  Both really popular dishes, very tasty, and very available at almost any restaurant.

Then more on to some trout amandine.  YUMMM.

  8. If you are eating seafood for the first time, I would NOT try sushi.  Sushi can be very good, if it is prepared properly by someone who knows what they are doing.  I would suggest finding a good seafood restaurant that serves regular fish like Talapia, Orange Roughy, Walleye or Pickerel, Whitefish, Codfish, Halibut.  All of the just named fish are very mild tasting and can be served fried, seared, grilled, baked, broiled.  If you feel adventerous you can try shrimp or scallops.  Both are very mild, sweet tasting shellfish.

  9. Seafood is not for everyone and there are many different kinds.  I do not recommend sushi for your first time...I have been eating seafood all my life and can tolerate "fishy" choices, but I am not a fan of sushi...

I would suggest something very mild and seasoned/marinated well.  Try some scallops, sole or tilapia.  Cooked correctly they are delicious and not "fishy" at all.

  10. sushi, is the last dish you want to try,,, it's not cooked..eww!      I suggest some scallops in butter and lobster,,,,,,try some fried shrimp.....coctail sauce,,, if you don't like any of these,,,,,,you will never like seafood,,,,my fav?  crab, mixed with artichokes and cream cheese..

  11. Most people seem to enjoy lobster, and I'd recommend it boiled and served with melted butter for dipping.

You may want to try linguine with red clam sauce, doesn't taste fishy and is usually a good introduction to sea food, especially if you like pasta or Italian food in general.

If you decide to try sushi, find someone who eats it regularly and ask them where a good place is. I recommend the salmon and tuna.

  12. start with shrimp scampi that is pasta with garlic with sauce and jumbo shrimp. not sushi yet, you not ready for that yet. talking about raw fish and wasabi (hot but weird taste). you might feel disgusted if thats your first time eating.and you may never wanted to eat seafoods ever again. but sushi are good. im addicted to it. so just try shirmps. jumbo shrimps.
