what is the criteria for selecting a vessel engine?

my design vessel is a general cargo that carries bananas, runs at 4763 horse power, goes to and from USA and China while rebunking at hawaii

the dimensions are 486.5 x 64 x 26 (ft)

any websites or other sources to search for the proper engine?

  1. Fairbanks or Paxman, but do NOT exceed the vessel limitations


  2. Caterpillar diesel, Detroit diesel, Cummins diesel, MAN diesel, just to name a few. Sort through those to find your HP requirement.

  3. When I did the engine selection for my ship design project in school I used the MAN B&W site. It's pretty user friendly for this. (Since graduating it seems that the engines are chosen first and the ships are designed around them!)

    Just select your engine speed (Low or Medium) and type (mechanically or electronically governed) then look at the options that fall in your power range (given in kW - you'll have to convert).  

    Remember that you don't want your engine to be maxed out at design speed.  Don't spend too much time hunting for an engine with the exact power you calculated, you  want some reserve.
