What is your opinion about puppies being sold around 8 weeks old at Christmas time? Should the breeder hold the puppies until Christmas is over or should they pups be sold at 6 weeks old?

Just thought I'd ask cuz tons of dogs go to the pound around Christmas. =(

  1. 8 weeks sounds fine

  2. Any decent breeder will INSIST that the prospective owner wait until after the holiday to take possession of the new pup.

Holidays are the worst time to bring a new pup into a home.  For many reasons, but among them is that a new animal should be brought into a calm and quiet environment, and Christmas is anything BUT calm and quiet!

Also, a reputable breeder will never allow one of his/her pups to be given as a Christmas gift.  A good breeder knows that acquiring a puppy should be a family decision, and all members should be in agreement ... in other words, no surprises!

No pup should leave its mom and littermates at 6 weeks.  Any "breeder" that would allow his/her pups to be taken away so young just to make a buck for Christmas is shady, and clearly doesn't have the pups' best interests at heart.

  3. make sure the breeder has a return policy. My Basenji breeder will gladly take back unwanted pups instead of going to the pound. Especially Christmas pups =) Good Luck!

  4. around christmas is perfect.:)

its the cutest, best gift someone could give. you would have lots of success! good luck.

  5. Most reputable breeders are extra cautious around Christmas time.

Dogs usually don't make good gifts, especially if your giving it to someone outside your family (this is a gift that keeps on TAKING, dogs are expensive to maintain, between feeding and vet bills, $1500+ a year, even more if the dog has health problems or has to have emergency vet care).

If someone wants to give someone a dog, they should give them a "gift certificate" instead, saying that if the person picks out a dog from a breeder or animal shelter, they'll get the dog.

When my mom got my dad a new hunting dog puppy a few years ago, she put together a little booklet that contains pictures of the puppy, pictures of the parents, lists of field-trial titles the parents held, the puppy's pedigree, etc. She gave that to my dad, and he got the actual puppy about a month later.

Puppies should never be sold at 6 weeks old. Absolute minimum is 8 weeks. 10 weeks is better, and 12 weeks for small-breed puppies.

  6. o i think u should sell puppies befor e christmas because it will make a perfect christmas present :-)

  7. 8 wks. old is the law, A lot of pups get adopted at Christmas time from the pound as well.

  8. Of course you should wait until they are 8 weeks old.  Puppy is the worst gift unless you allow the person to pick the puppy and the breed they want and make sure they are finacially ready.  How about a nice sweater?

  9. Selling pups at 6 weeks old is too young,it is also a bad idea to introduce the pup into the family with all the parties and celebrations of Christmas,I'd wait for the week after the holiday to let the pups go.

  10. if mine are readty at Xmas, i refuse to sell as xmas pets.

But all mine have right of return anyways.

I had wanted to breed my show girl to a nice boy, that theyd be due around xmas, but i have a full waiting list anyways. But alas, he wasnt into it.
