Question:

Selling a Car?

I'm selling my car and have advertised it on a few free websites. I have a got a few replies from people saying they'll buy the car, without even seeing it, and asking for my address where they'll send me a bank draft and someone will come to pick the car up. I've asked for cash, but they've said they can only give a bank draft. I've emailed them back and asked if they're genuine to ring me but they don't, they just email back again asking for my address. Do you think this sounds like a scam? I think maybe they'll give me the bank draft, take the car and then cancel the draft, so I'm left with no money and no car. Or if I lodged the draft into my bank account and it clears could they trace the account it went into and take it back out somehow? I'm desperate to sell the car as I really need the money but I'm afraid I'm being conned. Has anyone else been contacted this way when trying to sell their car?

  1. SCAM (fake draft).Do NOT turn over car or title untill funds have cleared.

  2. Old scam.

  3. This is a scam-sorry.

If they were genuine they would just ring you, to talk it out and also who buys a car without even seeing it in the flesh.

Please be carefull as you dont wanna lose your car and the money.  Try a reputable company to sell it through like Autotrader, cos although you might have to pay, its less likely that you'll get conned.

    good luck

  4. Do not deal with these people.

"I'm desperate to sell the car as I really need the money"

This says quite a lot about you, please temper your enthusium.

You are a conmans ticket to happiness.

  5. Cleared funds. Always !!

If someone wants to pay with a draught you need to be able to verify that it is genuine by calling the issuing branch. Most banks will do this but check first. To be honest, I would just steer clear of any enquiry I had any doubts about. If you think its a scam, its probably a scam.

Also think long and hard about where to sell your car as this can make a big difference to what you get back. If the car is under £2000 you are best off in the local 'free ads'. For cars over £5000 you are probably better off trying to sell to trade as private buyers in this market expect to pay trade values anyway. Most local papers have a Saturday motor supplement with photo ads and this is always a good place to sell mid priced cars.

Auto-trader just tends to attract canvassers, mail order scams etc etc. I have been working in the trade for many years and I would never try to sell through Auto-trader.

  6. simple,  if they want to do a draft,  wait until it has cleared your account,  then let them take it  -  not before

  7. Your suspicions are correct.  It is a scam.  Be very careful.  Even if they give you a check, & you deposit the check, it may take up to 2 weeks to find out the check is bogus.  Insist on a face to face sale with only 100% cash.

  8. It's a scam: Even after a draft or cheque has cleared, it can be revoked. Very common scam, offering a large amount & then you give them back the difference. It's sometimes done to launder money too - steer clear!

  9. YES it is a SCAM....

DO NOT DO THIS. IT IS WARNED ON CRAIGSLIST AND OTHER WEBSITES TO AVOID THIS ...

The problem now is the market is saturated.

Try Cars.com, pay for it. Put up good pics, that is your best chance or simply trade it in.

  10. autotrader is also full of scams i have my car there for sale and i have been contacted like that recently what you can do is get the bank draft and make sure it clears then you give them the car. until then nothing for them or you can scam the scammer and rob him

  11. Dont sell it to anyone unless your sure its genuine. Try autotrader.
