  1. Influenzas live roughly about 20-23 years, lofting around and around the globe every year in a 20-23 year long orbit.  They shoot off variations of themselves all the time during that period.  But, if we got the original bug, it's variations don't bother us so much.  We're sorta immune to them.  Not completely.  But, we sure don't usually get as sick from them.  What you may be experiencing is your "coming out" party, when a new bug, or MORE,  has started lofting around the globe and you haven't any previous experiences with it.  Influenzas operate on those 20 some year cycles.  Epidemiologists actually track them, name them, watch their life cycles as they whip around the globe every year. Typically, adults are fairly free of the worst of them from 40 - 65 years old, as the flu cycle patterns are clustered.  Then POW, something new comes around and you're as sick as the poor toddlers in nursery school are are just getting acquainted for the first time with zillions of creepy critters orbiting the planet.  Each following variation of that new bug, new for you, will be less and less hard on you as it grows less vicious and your immune system gets used to it. Be sure to get a flu shot.  Visit the World Health Organization's website at least once a week for flu updates.  And, keep in mind, your general immune system is starting to decline.  Avoid crowds, snotty nosed toddlers, or getting too run down.
