Question:

Sharp Pains (some tmi)?

I'm right at about 20 weeks, and i have been having sharp pains and some cramping in my lower abdomen and on my right side. I went to the doctor about 2pm (the pains started at 7 am) and the doctor did a urinalysis (results were inconclusive) and then we did a vaginal swab testing for an infection and it came back negative. The doctor told me the results were negative but he decided it was a UTI anyway.

On the other hand my mom when she was pregnant with me and my little brother had preterm labor and had the same symptoms as I did and the doctors did a billion tests for a UTI and never found anything.

I don't have any other symptoms like no painful or burning urination. Do you think it is a UTI or something else? I'm a little nervous...

  1. I am right at 18 weeks this is my 3rd child, And I have never once had pains like I do now with this baby. I went to the OB last week and she told me my uterus and everything is growing so that's why I am cramping. I feel like its non stop for me cramping or I get a tightening in my stomach that almost feels like braxton hicks if I can even get them this early. When I get them I try to lay down and rest!

  2. When I had very sharp pains like what you are having, I went to Doc's also and every test came back clear and negative! Well I sat in the Hospital for about 4 hours and realized " hey Doctor I have been to the bathroom for the past couple days ( #2)!" So he gave me something to help me go, I went and my pain went away!!!! Constipation is cause for a lot of pain in pregnancies!! Good luck and try going to the bathroom!!

  3. It could be your ligaments stretching out.  I still get that and I'm 34 weeks.  It started around week 20.  If that's the case, it's painful, but harmless.

  4. The cramping is what concerns me.  I have had my share of UTI's and cramping has never accrued.  If it continues or gets worse I would go to the ER.  Good luck

  5. If you were having a preterm labor, then you'd have regular contractions, each lasting only a couple of minutes (less then five) with a certain (always the same) amount of time in between. You'd also be dilated which your doctor probably would have seen.
