panasonic plasma at circuit city for $899? its a 720p 42 inch. We heard the panasonic's are actually the best plasmas and this price is really good. plus we just got a vizio and it makes a cracking sound, like from the frame... we heard this is bad. so we're taking it back. is this a good idea?

Panasonic Plasmas are in fact the best on the market.  Since the TV you are looking at is only 42 inches, a 720p set is pretty much perfect.  As far as the Vizio, the cracking sound may be coming from the glass expanding as the TV gets warm against the frame.  It is not bad besides the fact that this is making noise.  Usually it doesn't.  If you wanted to consider keeping the Vizio, you could try to contact the manufacturer to see if they have a fix.  You may find this to be very frustrating.  Panasonic has a great Customer Care Phone line, especially compared to Vizio.  Your plan sounds like a very good plan.
