Question:

Should I become a waiter?

I recently quit my full time job in order to become a student. Im only 19, and I am thinking about what i want to do for a part time job. Ive thought about working as a waiter because I have never done it before. Its totally something different from what I have done in the past. I know that there are pros and cons to working as a waiter. Tips, meeting new people, whatnot, etc. And then rude people, small or no tips, and regret. Should I apply as a waiter? Ive heard the tips are good, but sometimes. What do you think?

  1. If you’re a night owl who can put up with occasionally very rude people in a hectic, fast paced environment than it would probably be a good job for you.

  2. I say go for it.  I was a waiter for a month and was fired because waitering was not for me.  I never put it on my resume because I wasn't there long enough.  I say you will never know until you try it out.  It can't hurt.

  3. That's how I got through college. I loved it for a couple of years but after a while the late nights and always working holidays got to me. Still, when you're a student it works out pretty well because there's some flexibility in the hours and tips can be very good if you land in the right place. Most high end restaurants are going to want some experience. Otherwise, you might have to start out busing tables, then work your way up to an assistant before you become a full-fledged waiter.

  4. i have worked in restaurant for 25 years and if you work in a nice place in a nice area yes tips are great upward of $200. a night
