Hp owns gateway so there kind of the same company but HP is much better and higher quality

These days computers are not made by the manufacturers who have the sticker on the outside. They are made in Taiwan by ODM manufacturers like Quanta, Compal or Inventec. So just look at the computer specs and who offers a good warranty where you can reach tech support without hours on hold - see who has won awards for technical support.

Having said that looking at the specs, HP is better. It has Intel Core Duo processor, larger screen. Intel computers also offer better battery life especially the Centrino ones over AMD.
