Should I really do this?

My mother has ordered me to spend a certain amount, on her birthday, but she has already made me spend a whole lot of money on clothes, claiming what I wear is not good enough. When she says my clothes aren't good enough, I begin to see them that way, even if previously, I liked them. I spent a fortune on the clothes, and now I'm stressed because my bank account has gone right down.

How old are you? If you're on your own and make your own money, then your mother should not have an opinion on what you wear - if you live with your mother and under the age of say...18...then ok let her buy your clothes using both of your opinions and buying what you like and what she thinks is appropriate...

You need to pull yourself back from this situation and observe this controlling behavior for what it is.  Your question does not indicate how old you are, but I presume you are a young adult.  Quit spending on clothes, and spend only what your budget allows on your mother--regardless of her orders.  Find out if your health insurance will help you get counseling, because you're going to need a lot of strength of overcome your mother's issues.

How old are you? And why is she ordering you to spend "a certain " amount? Have more faith in yourself and your own tastes and spend the amount YOU WANT on someone else's birthday, family or not.

Sounds like your mom needs to get out of the kitchen and learn how money is really made. Only then will she appreciate the value of the dollar.

You let your Mother tell you what to wear? If you are over 18 thats ridiculous. Tell her from now on if she wants to buy you clothes then go ahead otherwise you will pick out your own clothes. Remind her that you aren't criticizing her.

to spend on her birthday is okay just to give thanks to her for raising you. but demanding you where to spend your money is like she's treating you still a child and wear what you are comfortable with..
