Question:

Should I work on spiking?

I am about 5'4'', and have volleyball tryouts coming up in about 3 weeks. This is the first time that I'm trying out for a volleyball team, so I'm wondering whether or not I should practice spiking the ball, even though I'm pretty short. Thanks!

  1. My straight forward answer is Yes.

Not sure how young you are but I am sure you will be required to show the coach how much you have, even if you are not planning to play a certain positions.

It is all about potentials, and you will never know when you could become a 7-foot player in six months.

So work on everything if you have time, and try to learn some more if you have an experienced player who can offer some help.

    Have fun playing volleyball.

  2. yeah spiking is important in a game, but thats not the only thing. what you should work on is PASSING. passing is the most important thing in volleyball. Without passes there wouldnt be sets and without sets, there wouldnt be spiking. so yeah i suggest you work on passing and the spiking will come easy later.

  3. Yes, I would do so.  Given you have not played competitively before, I would focus on hitting the ball without jumping at first... you want to show you can contact the ball right even if you won't be a hitter.  Watch the ball intensely- try to see the seams as it comes to you.

That said, I would strongly recommend getting someone with some coaching experience to watch you and make sure you are doing the arm motion correctly -- it is hard to undo a bad habit!

  4. Umm YESS!!! You definitely need to practice. Especially if this is your first time trying out! I played JV the last two years and one of the main things they focus on is spiking. They also focus on your agressivness/agility and serving behind the line.

This site is also very helpful.

One thing you should be doing these upcoming weeks is lifting weights to strengthen your arm muscles and do

squats to strengthen your leg muscles since 99.9 percent

of the time you are down low and ready for the ball. Also

start jogging/running if you don't already do this. Tryouts

are killer and usually consist of a lot of running and such

to show your stamina. Another thing you might want to

consider is practicing jumping. Jump onto a certain object so many times a day and gradually increase the height of the

object to allow your body to jump higher and higher.

One more thing, if you mess up a play, don't get down on yourself. Everyone messes up. And coaches don't like to see players get angry with themselves. They like to see players move on and play twice as hard to make up for their mistake or whatnot. Our team had a story last year that we liked to remind eachother of on the court when one of us was down on ourselves.

"A donkey was walking down a dirt road and fell into a hole. In order to successfully get out of this hole, he realized he had to brush off the dirt and step up out of the hole." Leading to our phrase- "Brush it off and step it up."

So when you mess up or you don't think you're doing too well, just brush it off and step up your game.

I really hope this helps you and good luck at your tryouts!!! :]]

  5. go for it i love spiking so much

  6. yeah the more things you can do the better and just because your short doesnt mean you shouldnt be able to hit.  work on your legs to make your vertical higher to make up for your lackness of height.

  7. Not really.  Concentrate more on the DS or setter spot.  Trust me, the older you get, the less the team will look to you as a spiker.

  8. you shouldnt do spike until you have nailed the underhand  you could pull a mucsle and it depends how much upper body strenght you have ..=D
